Cinco de Mayo or the fifth of May is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate Mexico and its national spirit: Tequila. However, it is also important to note that the day celebrates the anniversary of the country’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. Also, surprising to many outside of the country, the day isn’t even an official Mexican holiday, and although celebrations take place, mostly in the state of Puebla, most Mexicans don’t really even celebrate the holiday.
Despite this realization, there is no reason why we can't use this as an excuse to make and drink some classic tequila cocktails on the day. Here are 5 cocktails made with Tequila to make your Cinco de Mayo celebration appropriately festive.
1. Margarita

We can't start a Tequila cocktail list without including the most classic and iconic tipple of them all. The Margarita, well-known across the world has many variations from the frozen to the Tommy's. This is how I like to make mine.
2. Paloma

Probably the second most popular tequila cocktail after the Margarita, the Paloma is a beautiful marriage of earthy agave flavours with bright refreshing grapefruit. Note that this is a variation of the classic recipe that doesn't rely on grapefruit soda.
3. Mexican Coffee

Think Irish Coffee with a Latin twist; the Mexican coffee is a beautiful blend of Kahlúa, tequila, and coffee for the morning enthusiast. This recipe would be great for a brunch delight or even a late-night pick up.
4. Rosita

A lesser-known spirit-forward Tequila cocktail. Part of the Negroni family tree, the Rosita is a variation to the root recipe that is a perfect aperitif sipper before your taco meal.
5. Watermelon Margarita

A favorite and go-to recipe variation of the popular classic Margarita. The addition of refreshing watermelon juice and the spicy chili salt garnish gives the kick and swing for some dynamism to the classic.
